Biochar enhanced phytostabilization of heavy metal contaminated mine tailings: A review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mining activities has generated large amounts of mine tailings each year, and these usually contain high concentrations heavy metal pollutants, which not only cause serious damage to the local surrounding soil ecosystems, but also harm human health via transmission food chain. Phytoremediation is treated as environmentally friendly, long-term effective low-cost restoration method. However, tailing acidification, low organic matter content, poor water holding capacity compaction make plant struggle survive. Biochar, a conditioner can promote growth by improving physical, chemical biological properties soil, thus strengthening ability phytoremediation in contaminated tailings. This review elaborates how physicochemical biochar affect phytoremediation; summarized raw materials characteristics. Finally, future research directions are prospected.

Integron diversity in heavy-metal-contaminated mine tailings and inferences about integron evolution.
Integrons are horizontal gene transfer (HGT) systems containing elements necessary for site-specific recombination and expression of foreign DNA. The overall phylogenetic distribution of integrons and range of genes that can be transferred by integrons are unknown. This report contains an exploration of integrons in an environmental microbial community and an investigation of integron evolution...
متن کاملAnalysis of transgenic Indian mustard plants for phytoremediation of metal-contaminated mine tailings.
Transgenic Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.] plants overproducing the enzymes gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (ECS) or glutathione synthetase (GS) were shown previously to have increased levels of the metal-binding thiol peptides phytochelatins and glutathione, and enhanced Cd tolerance and accumulation. Furthermore, transgenic Indian mustard plants overexpressing adenosine triphos...
متن کاملHeavy metal concentrations in marine sediments impacted by a mine-tailings spill, Marinduque Island, Philippines
A mine-tailings spill occurred on the island of Marinduque, Philippines, on 24 March 1996. Originating from the Marcopper Mine, tailings sludge flowed down the Boac River abruptly and during subsequent storm events. Most of the tailings material has since accumulated in the nearshore environment along the western coast of the island. Nineteen sediment cores were collected from this site and ana...
متن کاملLeachability of Arsenic and Heavy Metals from Mine Tailings of Abandoned Metal Mines
Mine tailings from an abandoned metal mine in Korea contained high concentrations of arsenic (As) and heavy metals [e.g., As: 67,336, Fe: 137,180, Cu: 764, Pb: 3,572, and Zn: 12,420 (mg/kg)]. US EPA method 6010 was an effective method for analyzing total arsenic and heavy metals concentrations. Arsenic in the mine tailings showed a high residual fraction of 89% by a sequential extraction. In To...
متن کاملOptimization of Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria-Assisted Phytostabilization of Mine Tailings.
Recent studies have indicated that plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can improve revegetation of arid mine tailings as measured by increased biomass production. The goals of the present study were first to evaluate how mode of application of known PGPB affects plant growth, and second to evaluate the effect of this inoculation on rhizosphere microbial community structure. PGPB application ...
